Survivin’ the Holidays
Enjoy the holidays without expanding your waist line
It’s that time of year again when the snow begins to fall but your weight may begin to rise. Some studies that indicate Americans gain only about one or two pounds during this season (up to five pounds for those who are currently overweight or obese.)
Now, you may be thinking, “Only a couple pounds. Hmm, that’s not so bad.” Looking at the big picture, however, the question becomes, will you lose that weight after the holidays? According to research, most weight isn’t lost after the holidays; therefore, holiday weight gain can significantly contribute to rising obesity rates in America.1
What are we to do? The outcome appears so bleak. Fortunately, there are five simple tips that I will discuss to help restrain expanding waistlines.
Tips for Restraining Your Expanding Waistline
Let’s get started. The tips below are from the Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert2, along with some personal suggestions.
Stay Active
Inactivity is one of the major causes of weight gain. We decide to skip our workout because of other “holiday obligations.” Working out is a great way to decrease stress and support energy, skipping it may add to holiday stress. Remember, the stores will still be open when you’re done working out. If you can’t fit in your whole workout, cut it down a bit and take a few extra laps around the mall.
Don’t Starve Yourself
Many of us compensate for the extra calories at parties by skipping meals throughout the day. This method can lead to an unhealthy binge every time! Continue to eat your normal, healthy meals and focus on veggie and fruit trays (monitoring the dip) or non-fried, higher protein hors d’oeuvres at the party. A piece of fruit before you go can help curb your appetite when you arrive.
Choose Healthy Options
Most of the time there will be a healthier option to choose from on the buffet. As mentioned above, plain fruit and veggie trays are great choices; low fat yogurt, low fat sour cream, or hummus are great dip options. If you’re hosting, there are always ways to decrease fat and sugar from a recipe — search for healthy options online.
HoliDAYS
Holidays are days, not weeks or months. It’s one evening for the party not the whole week. Enjoy yourself for the evening and get right back to your healthy routine the next day.
The Reason for the Season
Holiday parties are planned to get together with friends and family. They are to be filled with joy, love, and fellowship. Your body will tell you what it needs or doesn’t need (but you do have to listen.) Plan to have your favorite treats, but don’t overindulge.
Gym memberships, gift certificates, or workout apparel are perfect holiday gifts. Plus, you can get a jump-start on any New Year’s resolutions. Enjoy the season spending time with friends and family. And if you keep these tips in mind while listening to your body, you may be able to lessen the effects of this holiday season!
